If I lightly draw my bow (with little to no downward pressure) on the A, E, or D string, I'll hear a faint, but crystal-clear open note. If I do the same thing on the G string, all I'll get is a scratching sound.

Try and play with a more even bow. If the sounds are weak or high pitched, then consider playing between the fingerboard and the bridge. If the sound is scratchy try applying rosin to your bow and play with even and firm pressure to get the best results.
